Amid checking for eggs, feeding cows, walking donkeys, and taking in the on-going frisbee games, I took a few minutes here and there to play with my cameras and let my inner photographer have some fun.

Macro Photography Homework

At this month's Mamas with Cameras meetup, our speaker was Sally Halvorsen, an incredibly talented macro photographer.

Sally spoke about her inspiration, the equipment she uses, how she sets up her shots, and how macro photography is her passion. Her goal is to capture the delicacy of flowers and plants ... and to photography each flower's "face".

She was inspiring and entertaining, so say the least. At the end of the meetup, Sally challenged each of us to pull out our macro lenses and put them to work. It didn't take much for me to do exactly that after hearing Sally talk about her love of this art form. A couple of days later, out came my camera, tripod, light box (for fruit photos because the rain drove me back inside), and macro lenses. I struggled with my Lensbaby lens (need more practice, obviously), but feel like I did a pretty good job with my standard macro lens.

I look forward to some more breaks in our wet weather so I can head outside again to try shooting more than only the tulips in our front yard!

Annika did a great job capturing some lovely photos of the tulip festival on her tablet. I wanted to make sure she and her photography received their rightful spotlight and recognition.

Mamas with Cameras 365 Photo Challenge: Week 2

Well, another week of my Mamas with Cameras 2016 photo challenge is complete and I'm really excited about some of my shots! It has been another fun week behind the lens, but also somewhat challenging week due to the vast amount of darkness we seem to have this time of year. Fortunately, we had some breaks in the weather, which gave me a few opportunities to shoot outside without fearing that the camera will get drenched.

In order to keep the kids from getting burned out on being photographed, I am continually looking for new subjects and ways to challenge myself. They're still my favorites to shoot, but I try to limit how much I shoot them to make sure I'm remembering to interact with them and not just capture what they're doing. Oh, that double-edged sword of being a mama with a camera!

Mamas with Cameras 365 Challenge: Week 1

I know, I know ... I don't have nearly enough to do, right? SO, it makes perfect sense for me to take on a 365 (actually 366 because of this being a leap year) photography project. I did a 365 project about a year and a half ago and really enjoyed learning about myself as a photographer and what things inspired me.

A number of us in the Mamas with Cameras photography group have decided to band together and do a 365 photo project together. The great thing is each mama can make her own rules ... we're beholden to no one except ourselves.

I have two rules for this challenge. Rule #1: Have fun! Rule #2: Write a weekly blog post that shows the week's photos.

2015 Photo Challenge: Week 4

It's hard to believe, but it is already time to post the final photos for the March 2015 Mamas with Cameras photo challenge. After completing a lengthy 365 photo challenge, the one-month challenge seemed as fast as a blink of an eye!

The last part of this month sure had incredible weather, which helped me get quite a few outdoor shots. That said, yesterday was "wild and crazy weather day" with rain, thunder, lightening, and hail, so it was fitting to finish up the photo challenge with a shot of Annika jumping into a puddle in our back yard.
